Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 0.5 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.25 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 16 ounces spaghetti or crusty bread

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, parmesan cheese, 2 minced garlic cloves, egg, fresh parsley, 1 teaspoon of salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 2

Roll the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place them on a sheet tray. You should have about 16-18 meatballs.

Step 3

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches and brown them on all sides, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the browned meatballs and set them aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the diced onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent. Add the remaining 2 minced garlic cloves and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, sugar, and the remaining 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

Step 6

Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Cover and simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are cooked through and the sauce is thickened.

Step 7

Stir in the fresh basil leaves just before serving.

Step 8

Serve the meatballs and sauce over cooked spaghetti or with crusty bread on the side. Garnish with extra parmesan cheese and fresh parsley if desired.
