Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 2 cups Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 2 cups (grated) Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup (grated) Parmesan cheese
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon (chopped) Fresh thyme
  • 0.25 teaspoons (ground) Nutmeg
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of butter.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin, even slices (about 1/8-inch thick) using a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer.

Step 3

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat.

Step 4

In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, salt, black pepper, thyme, and nutmeg. Stir in the sautéed garlic and melted butter.

Step 5

Layer one-third of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly. Sprinkle 1/3 of the grated Gruyère and Parmesan cheeses over the potato layer.

Step 6

Pour one-third of the cream mixture over the cheese and potatoes. Repeat this layering process two more times, ending with the cream mixture on top.

Step 7

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.

Step 8

Remove the foil, sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the top, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender and the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Step 9

Allow the gratin to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh thyme, if desired.
