Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pounds ground pork
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.25 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 14.5 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 0 fresh grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef and ground pork. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon and cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Drain excess grease if needed.

Step 5

Season the meat mixture with salt, black pepper, oregano, basil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Add the tomato paste to the pot and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, to deepen its flavor.

Step 7

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and beef broth. Stir well to combine.

Step 8

Sprinkle in the granulated sugar and mix it into the sauce.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 10

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of water or beef broth to reach your desired consistency.

Step 11

Stir in the chopped fresh parsley and remove the pot from heat.

Step 12

Serve the spaghetti sauce over your favorite pasta and top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
