Ingredients

  • 1 cup Dried hibiscus flowers
  • 6 cups Water
  • 0.5 cup Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh ginger (peeled and sliced)
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 5 pieces Cloves
  • 1 teaspoon Orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the dried hibiscus flowers under cold running water to remove any dust or impurities. Drain well.

Step 2

In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 3

Once the water is boiling, add the rinsed hibiscus flowers, sugar, fresh ginger slices, cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange zest.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar completely.

Step 5

After simmering, remove the pot from the heat and let the Karkanji steep for an additional 5 minutes to enhance the flavor.

Step 6

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher to remove the solids (hibiscus flowers, ginger, cinnamon stick, and cloves).

Step 7

Allow the tea to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour if serving cold.

Step 8

Taste the tea and adjust sweetness or tanginess by adding more sugar or lemon juice, if desired.

Step 9

Serve chilled over ice cubes for a refreshing drink, or warm it up for a cozy version.
