Ingredients

  • 3 pounds beef chuck roast
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 units garlic cloves
  • 0.25 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 units French rolls
  • 8 units provolone cheese slices
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Directions

Step 1

Peel and slice the onion into thin rings. Mince the garlic cloves and set them aside.

Step 2

In a slow cooker, add beef chuck roast, beef broth, sliced onion, minced garlic, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and black pepper. Stir gently to combine.

Step 3

Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for 8 hours, or until the beef is tender and can be shredded easily with a fork.

Step 4

Once the beef is cooked, remove it from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded beef to the slow cooker to soak up the juices.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 6

Slice the French rolls in half lengthwise and spread a small amount of butter on the insides of each roll. Place the rolls on a baking sheet with the cut side up, and toast them in the oven for 5 minutes, or until lightly golden.

Step 7

Remove the rolls from the oven, and place a heaping portion of shredded beef on the bottom half of each roll. Top the beef with a slice of provolone cheese.

Step 8

Place the sandwiches (open-faced) back into the oven for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and close each sandwich with the top half of the toasted roll.

Step 10

Strain the remaining liquid in the slow cooker to remove the onion and garlic pieces. Serve the strained broth in small bowls as au jus for dipping.

Step 11

Serve the French dip sandwiches warm, accompanied by the au jus for dipping. Enjoy!
