Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1.5 tablespoons Kahlua (coffee liqueur)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water over medium heat.

Step 3

Cook the sugar-water mixture while stirring until the sugar dissolves. Then stop stirring and let it simmer until it turns into a golden amber caramel, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 4

Immediately pour the caramel into the bottom of a flan mold or round baking dish, tilting the dish to evenly coat the bottom. Be careful as the caramel is very hot. Set aside to cool and harden.

Step 5

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, Kahlua, and vanilla extract. Blend on medium speed for 15-20 seconds until smooth.

Pour the blended mixture over the hardened caramel in the flan mold. Cover the mold tightly with aluminum foil.

Step 7

Place the flan mold in a larger roasting pan. Pour hot water into the roasting pan until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold to create a water bath.

Carefully transfer the roasting pan to the oven and bake for 60 minutes or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

Step 9

Remove the flan mold from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to fully set.

Step 10

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Place a large plate on top of the mold and quickly invert the flan onto the plate, letting the caramel sauce drip over the top.
