Ingredients

  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 large Egg
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil or additional melted butter

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is foamy and activated.

Step 2

In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the milk and butter together until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the yeast mixture, sugar, lukewarm milk and butter mixture, beaten egg, and salt. Mix well.

Step 4

Gradually add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or a dough hook if using a stand mixer. Continue until a soft dough forms.

Step 5

Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes by hand (or 4-5 minutes if using a stand mixer on a medium setting) until the dough is smooth and elastic.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and turn it to coat the surface with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough and transfer it back to the floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round roll.

Step 8

Place the rolls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving enough space between each roll to expand. Cover again with a towel and let the rolls rise for 30-45 minutes, until nearly doubled in size.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 11

Immediately brush the tops with melted butter for that trademark tender and flavorful crust.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy with butter, honey, or your favorite jam.
