Ingredients

  • 8 cups Apple cider
  • 3 Cinnamon sticks
  • 6 Whole cloves
  • 1 Star anise
  • 1 Orange
  • 1 inch piece Fresh ginger
  • 0.25 teaspoons Nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons Brown sugar (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Pour the apple cider into a large pot or saucepan.

Step 2

Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise to the pot.

Step 3

Slice the orange into thin rounds and add them to the cider.

Step 4

Peel and slice the piece of ginger and add it to the pot.

Step 5

Stir in the nutmeg, and if desired, the brown sugar for added sweetness.

Step 6

Place the pot over medium heat and bring the cider to a gentle simmer. Do not let it boil.

Step 7

Once it starts to simmer, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the cider simmer for 30 minutes to allow the spices to infuse.

Step 8

After 30 minutes, taste and adjust sweetness, if desired. Remove the pot from heat.

Step 9

Strain the cider through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the spices, orange slices, and ginger.

Step 10

Ladle the spiced apple cider into mugs and serve warm. Optionally, garnish with additional cinnamon sticks or orange slices.
