Ingredients

  • 4 cups (approximately 2 cans of 28 oz each) canned baked beans (original or with pork)
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 medium, diced yellow onion
  • 2 cloves, minced garlic
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 0.3333 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for extra heat)
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the bacon from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Once cooled, chop it into small pieces and set aside.

Step 3

Reserve about 1 tablespoon of the bacon drippings in the skillet. Add the diced onion to the skillet and sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened and translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, combine the baked beans, ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, chili powder, hot sauce (if using), salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

Step 5

Stir in the cooked onions, garlic, and half of the chopped bacon into the bean mixture. Mix thoroughly to ensure all ingredients are evenly combined.

Step 6

Pour the bean mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish or a similarly sized oven-safe casserole dish. Spread it out evenly.

Step 7

Sprinkle the remaining chopped bacon on top of the beans.

Step 8

Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the sauce is thickened and bubbly, and the top is slightly caramelized.

Step 9

Remove the baked beans from the oven and let them rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
