Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1.5 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter (optional, for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and diced green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Push the veggies to the side of the skillet. Add the ground beef to the empty side and begin browning it. Break it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Cook until no longer pink, about 7-8 minutes.

Step 5

Once the beef is cooked through, drain any excess grease from the skillet.

Step 6

Return the skillet to the heat and mix the cooked beef and veggies together.

Step 7

Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, paprika, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and water to the skillet. Stir well to combine.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

Step 9

While the filling simmers, optionally toast the hamburger buns by spreading a light layer of butter on the cut sides and placing them face-down in a heated skillet or griddle. Toast until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 10

Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns, dividing equally among the 4 servings.

Step 11

Serve immediately and enjoy your Josie’s Sloppy Joes!
