Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces canned tomato paste
  • 14.5 ounces canned diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 0.5 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1 whole bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Once the oil is hot, add the diced onion and cook for 3–5 minutes until soft and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, taking care not to burn the garlic.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and beef broth. Mix well to combine.

Step 6

Add the dried oregano, basil, parsley, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, and granulated sugar. Stir to distribute the seasonings evenly.

Step 7

Drop in the bay leaf, reduce the heat to low, and cover the pot. Simmer the sauce for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove and discard the bay leaf before serving.

Step 9

Serve the sauce over your favorite spaghetti or pasta. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley, if desired.
