Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb mild Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cans crushed tomatoes (28 oz)
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
  • 0.25 cup water
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 piece large egg
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef, sausage, and chopped onion over medium heat until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat.

Step 3

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Season with dried basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley. Let the sauce simmer over low heat for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 5

While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, laying the noodles flat on a sheet of parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 6

In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, 1 tablespoon of parsley, and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined.

Step 7

Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce onto the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 8

Place 3-4 cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce in a single layer, overlapping slightly if necessary.

Step 9

Spread 1/3 of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the ricotta.

Step 10

Add 1 cup of the meat sauce over the mozzarella. Repeat this layering process (noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, and sauce) two more times, ending with a layer of meat sauce on top.

Step 11

Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese evenly over the top layer of sauce.

Step 12

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil, ensuring it does not touch the cheese to prevent sticking.

Step 13

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

Step 14

Let the lasagna rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
