Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces Tomato paste
  • 15 ounces Tomato sauce
  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 teaspoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 16 ounces Dry spaghetti
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (for garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil.

Step 2

Brown the ground beef and Italian sausage together in the pot, breaking them apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 3

Add the diced onion to the pot and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Mix in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Stir well to combine.

Step 6

Add the sugar, dried basil, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir thoroughly.

Step 7

Toss in the bay leaf. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 8

While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente, then drain.

Step 9

Remove the bay leaf from the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.

Step 10

Toss the cooked spaghetti with the sauce, or serve the sauce ladled over the top of the pasta.

Step 11

Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley before serving.
