Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 12 pieces lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 0.75 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, chopped onion, and minced garlic until the meat is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat.

Step 2

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Add sugar, dried basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the sauce uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and rinse the noodles under cold water to prevent sticking. Set aside.

Step 4

In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and fresh parsley. Stir until well blended.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 6

To assemble the lasagna, spread 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce over the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Step 7

Arrange 4 lasagna noodles lengthwise in a single layer over the sauce.

Step 8

Spread 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella and 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan over the ricotta.

Step 9

Repeat the layers two more times: meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, and Parmesan.

Step 10

Finish with a final layer of noodles, remaining meat sauce, and the remaining shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 11

Cover the dish with aluminum foil, ensuring the foil does not touch the cheese to prevent sticking.

Step 12

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Step 13

Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
