Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 14.5 ounces diced tomatoes (with juice)
  • 1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans (drained and rinsed)
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 0 as needed shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for serving)
  • 0 as needed sour cream (optional, for serving)
  • 0 as needed chopped green onions (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Cook and crumble the beef until it's browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot with the browned beef. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onion is softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), kidney beans, pinto beans, and water.

Step 4

Sprinkle in the chili powder, ground cumin, sugar, oregano, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper (if using), and paprika. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the chili simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 6

Taste the chili and adjust the seasonings as needed, adding more salt, spices, or cayenne for heat, if desired.

Step 7

Serve hot in bowls, optionally topped with shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, or green onions for garnish. Pair with cornbread or tortilla chips for a complete meal.
