Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup warm water
  • 2 None large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar (for filling)
  • 1.5 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter (softened, for filling)
  • 1.5 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, warm the milk until it is just about to simmer. Remove from heat and stir in the 1/4 cup of unsalted butter and 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, mixing until the butter melts. Set aside to cool to lukewarm.

Step 2

In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water (about 105°F). Let it sit for 5-7 minutes until foamy.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, foamy yeast, eggs, and salt. Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky.

Step 4

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle (about 12x16 inches).

Step 7

Spread the 1/4 cup softened butter over the surface of the dough. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the buttered dough.

Step 8

Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal, then cut the log into 12 equal pieces.

Step 9

Place the rolls into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 10

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 11

While the rolls bake, prepare the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach a pourable consistency.

Step 12

When the cinnamon rolls are done baking, let them cool for 5-10 minutes before drizzling the glaze over the top. Serve warm and enjoy!
