In a small saucepan, heat the milk, water, honey, and butter over medium-low heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm (about 110°F/43°C). Remove from heat and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of the flour, yeast, and salt. Stir to combine.
Add the warm milk mixture and the egg to the flour mixture. Mix thoroughly until a sticky dough begins to form.
Gradually add the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition, until the dough becomes soft and only slightly sticky.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook and knead for 6-8 minutes.
Lightly grease a large bowl with nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough in the bowl, turning it to coat the surface. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
