Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each bread slice.
If desired, spread mustard on the unbuttered side of two of the bread slices.
Place one slice of cheese on the mustard (or unbuttered side) of each of the two bread slices.
Add two slices of ham on top of the cheese on each piece.
Top the ham with another slice of cheese, then lay the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side up.
