Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Yellow onion
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Brown sugar
  • 4 Burger buns
  • 4 Cheddar cheese slices
  • 4 Lettuce leaves
  • 4 Tomato slices
  • 4 tbsp Mayonnaise

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions.

Step 2

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil and butter to the pan.

Step 3

Once the butter has melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir to coat the onions in the oil and butter mixture.

Step 4

Cook the onions for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are golden brown and caramelized. Add the brown sugar during the last few minutes of cooking to enhance the sweetness. Set aside.

Step 5

While the onions cook, preheat your grill or a skillet to medium-high heat.

Step 6

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 7

Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing during cooking.

Step 8

Cook the patties on the grill or skillet for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Add a slice of cheddar cheese to the top of each patty during the last minute of cooking so it melts.

Step 9

Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill or skillet for about 1 minute, or until golden brown.

Step 10

Assemble the burgers by spreading 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun. Place a lettuce leaf and a tomato slice on top.

Step 11

Add the cooked burger patty and a generous amount of caramelized onions.

Step 12

Top with the other half of the bun and serve hot. Enjoy your delicious Jeff's Caramelized Onion Burger!
