Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.75 cups Unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cups Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups Brown sugar, packed
  • 3 whole Eggs, large
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cups Sour cream
  • 1 cups Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 cups Chopped nuts (optional, e.g., pecans or walnuts)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan and set it aside.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to cream together the softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).

Step 4

Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Alternately add the dry mixture and sour cream to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with the dry mixture. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine the chocolate chips, ground cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using).

Step 7

Spread half of the cake batter into the prepared baking pan, making sure it's evenly distributed.

Step 8

Sprinkle half of the chocolate chip mixture over the layer of batter.

Step 9

Spread the remaining batter on top, followed by the rest of the chocolate chip mixture. Lightly press the topping into the batter.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean (some chocolate may stick to the toothpick, but there shouldn't be uncooked batter).

Step 11

Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Step 12

Enjoy Janet's Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake warm or at room temperature with a cup of coffee or tea!
