Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set it aside.
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and cook for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes to toast the flour.
Gradually whisk in the milk and continue cooking until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5 minutes.

In a small bowl, mix the crushed butter crackers with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the casserole.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling around the edges.
