Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.75 cups Warm water (around 110°F/43°C)
  • 0.25 cups Vegetable oil
  • 2 pieces Large eggs
  • 1 piece Egg yolk (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon Water (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it foams.

Step 2

In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the dough blade, add the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Pulse a few times to combine.

Step 3

While the food processor is running, pour in the yeast mixture through the feed tube, followed by the vegetable oil and eggs, one at a time.

Step 4

Process the ingredients until the dough starts to come together into a rough ball (this should take about 1-2 minutes). If the dough is too sticky, add an additional tablespoon of flour at a time. If it’s too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it by hand for 1-2 minutes to ensure a smooth and elastic texture.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1.5-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 7

Once risen, punch the dough down and divide it into 3 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope, approximately 16-18 inches in length.

Step 8

Braid the three ropes together, pinching the ends to seal, and tuck them underneath slightly for a neater appearance.

Step 9

Place the braided dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it loosely with a towel and let it rise for another 30-40 minutes, or until noticeably puffy.

Step 10

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 11

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water to make the egg wash. Brush the egg wash generously over the surface of the risen dough. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top.

Step 12

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step 13

Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
