Ingredients

  • 12 oz Spaghetti
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 oz Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • 4 qt Water (for boiling pasta)
  • 1 tbsp Salt (for pasta water)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Once boiling, add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain and set aside.

Step 2

While the pasta is cooking, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it is browned and fully cooked. Drain off any excess grease and set the beef aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

Step 6

Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet and stir it into the sauce. Reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to blend.

Step 7

If the sauce appears too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 8

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to coat the pasta evenly. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to allow the spaghetti to absorb the flavors of the sauce.

Step 9
