Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 0.75 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups water
  • 0.5 cups fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoons orange zest
  • 0.25 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 0.5 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the cranberries under cold water and discard any mushy or damaged ones.

Step 2

In a medium saucepan, combine the water, orange juice, and granulated sugar. Place over medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved completely.

Step 3

Add the cranberries to the saucepan and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to medium-low and allow the cranberry mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.

Step 5

As the cranberries cook, they will start to burst and thicken the sauce. Once most of the cranberries have burst, stir in the orange zest, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.

Step 6

Continue cooking the sauce for an additional 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until it reaches your desired consistency.

Step 7

Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. As it cools, it will thicken further.

Step 8

Transfer the cooled cranberry sauce to a serving dish or an airtight container for storage. It can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
