In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, and milk. Mix gently until just combined.
Add the grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, egg, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper to the meat mixture. Mix thoroughly but avoid overworking the mixture.
Using clean hands, shape the meat mixture into small golf ball-sized meatballs. Place them on a plate or tray and refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up.
Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Sear the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside.
In the same pan, heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, and fresh basil leaves to the pan. Stir and bring to a simmer.
Return the browned meatballs to the pan, nestling them into the tomato sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, bring 1 liter of water to a boil in a large pot. Add a pinch of salt and cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Serve the meatballs and tomato sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese and garnish with additional parsley or basil if desired.
