Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Cream of tartar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 4 whole Large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1.25 cups Whole milk
  • 1.5 cups Unsalted butter (softened, for frosting)
  • 4 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Ground cinnamon (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoons Vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 3 tablespoons Heavy cream

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined after each addition.

Step 6

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.

Step 7

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 8

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 9

To prepare the frosting, beat the softened butter in a large bowl until creamy, about 2 minutes.

Step 10

Gradually add the powdered sugar to the butter, mixing on low speed until combined.

Step 11

Mix in the ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and heavy cream. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Step 12

Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

Step 13

Garnish with a light dusting of cinnamon if desired. Slice and serve!
