Ingredients

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set it aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook until al dente according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a large saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux, stirring constantly.

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, making sure to break up any lumps. Cook over medium heat until the mixture starts to bubble and thickens, about 3–5 minutes.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded cheddar, gruyere, and parmesan cheese, stirring until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

Add the ground mustard, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the cheese sauce. Mix well to combine.

Step 7

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat evenly.

Step 8

Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into the prepared 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 9

In a small bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs with the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter and the olive oil. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the dish cool for about 5 minutes before serving.

Step 12

Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, and enjoy!
