Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Ground Italian sausage
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 14 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 4 cups Mashed potatoes (prepared)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 4

Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant.

Step 5

Stir in the ground beef and ground Italian sausage, breaking them up into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked, about 7-8 minutes.

Step 6

Drain any excess grease from the skillet, then stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Let the mixture simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

While the meat sauce simmers, prepare the mashed potatoes by combining the prepared potatoes with butter, milk, and Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and creamy.

Step 8

Transfer the meat sauce to a baking dish (9x13 inches).

Step 9

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture, ensuring it covers the entire surface.

Step 10

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the mashed potatoes.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the dish cool for 5 minutes.

Step 13

Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
