Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or hot)
  • 6 cups Day-old bread, cubed (Italian or French bread recommended)
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, diced
  • 3 Celery stalks, diced
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups Chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 Egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Olive oil (for greasing the baking dish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with olive oil.

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble and cook the Italian sausage until browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat.

Step 3

In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and sauté until they become soft and translucent, about 5–7 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant. Remove the skillet from the heat.

Step 5

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, cubed bread, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir until evenly mixed.

Step 6

In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken or vegetable broth and the beaten egg. Slowly pour this mixture over the bread mixture, stirring gently until the bread absorbs the liquid but is not overly saturated.

Step 7

Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 8

Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 9

After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown and lightly crisp.

Step 10

Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
