Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds Ground beef (80% lean)
  • 0.5 pounds Ground pork
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 cups Milk
  • 0.5 cups Fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 0.5 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 large Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoons Dried thyme
  • 6 slices Provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1 cup Tomato sauce (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil (for greasing)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a loaf pan or baking dish with olive oil.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, eggs, breadcrumbs, and milk. Mix until just combined.

Step 3

Add the chopped basil, grated Parmesan cheese, diced onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and thyme to the mixture. Gently mix until everything is evenly incorporated, being careful not to overwork the meat mixture.

Step 4

On a clean surface or parchment paper, shape half of the meat mixture into a rectangular loaf about 1 inch thick.

Step 5

Layer the provolone slices evenly over the shaped meat, leaving a small border around the edges.

Step 6

Cover the provolone layer with the remaining meat mixture, pressing gently to seal the edges and form a complete loaf.

Step 7

Place the meatloaf in the prepared pan or baking dish. Spread the tomato sauce evenly on top of the loaf for a flavorful glaze.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 60-70 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center reads 160°F (71°C).

Step 9

Allow the meatloaf to rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired, and serve warm.
