Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 120 g Breadcrumbs
  • 60 ml Milk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 50 g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 800 g Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 0.5 tsp Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp Sugar (optional, for balancing acidity)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes to allow the breadcrumbs to absorb the milk.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, Parmesan cheese, 2 cloves of minced garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.

Step 3

Roll the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. This should yield approximately 16-18 meatballs.

Step 4

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches (do not overcrowd the pan) and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until browned all over. The meatballs do not need to be fully cooked at this stage. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the diced onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.

Step 6

Stir in the remaining minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the tomato paste and stir well to combine.

Step 7

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and add the dried oregano, dried basil, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), and sugar (if using). Stir to combine and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Step 8

Return the meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Cover with a lid and allow the meatballs to simmer in the sauce for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper as needed.

Step 10

Serve the meatballs and sauce over cooked spaghetti or alongside crusty bread. Garnish with additional Parmesan cheese and freshly chopped parsley, if desired.
