Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

Directions

Step 1

Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Once the olive oil is warm, add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Be careful not to let it burn.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, combining them well.

Step 4

Add the fresh thyme, dried oregano, sugar, kosher salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce gently simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent it from sticking.

Step 6

Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding a bit more salt, pepper, or sugar if desired.

Step 7

Stir in the balsamic vinegar during the last minute of cooking for a hint of tanginess and depth of flavor.

Step 8

Remove from heat and let cool slightly before spreading on your favorite pizza dough.

Step 9

Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
