Ingredients

  • 6 cups Fresh broccoli florets
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 ounces Cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons Ground mustard (optional)
  • 0.25 teaspoons Paprika (for garnish)
  • 0.5 cups Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cups Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli florets and blanch for 2-3 minutes until they are bright green and slightly tender. Drain and set aside.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Step 4

Sprinkle the flour over the onion mixture and whisk to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate any raw flour taste.

Step 5

Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook and stir until the mixture thickens slightly, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, cream cheese, salt, black pepper, and ground mustard (if using). Stir until the cheeses are fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 7

Add the blanched broccoli florets to the cheese sauce, stirring gently to coat all pieces evenly.

Step 8

Pour the broccoli and cheese mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 9

In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and olive oil. Mix until the breadcrumbs are evenly coated. Sprinkle this mixture over the casserole.

Step 10

Lightly dust the top with paprika for a festive look.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
