Ingredients

  • 250 g Marrowfat peas
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 L Water

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the marrowfat peas thoroughly under running water to remove any debris or dust.

Step 2

Place the peas in a large bowl and cover them with cold water. Add 1 tsp of baking soda to the water and stir gently.

Step 3

Let the peas soak overnight (at least 8 hours) to rehydrate and soften.

Step 4

The next day, drain and rinse the peas well under cold water to remove any residual baking soda.

Step 5

In a large saucepan, add the soaked peas and 1 liter of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 6

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the peas simmer gently for 30-40 minutes or until they are soft and starting to break down. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

Drain any excess water if necessary, then mash the softened peas with a fork or potato masher to your desired consistency. For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender.

Step 8

Stir in the unsalted butter, salt, and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Serve the mushy peas warm alongside your favorite dishes, such as fish and chips, roasted meats, or stews. Enjoy!
