Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.75 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 cups Unsweetened applesauce
  • 0.75 cups Buttermilk
  • 1 large Egg
  • 0.5 cups Raisins (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Rolled oats (for topping, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

Step 3

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the applesauce, buttermilk, and egg until smooth.

Step 4

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 5

If using raisins, fold them into the dough at this stage.

Step 6

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. The dough will be sticky, so lightly flour your hands to shape it into a round loaf.

Step 7

Place the loaf onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a deep “X” into the top of the dough to allow it to expand while baking.

Step 8

Sprinkle the top with rolled oats, if desired, for added texture and visual appeal.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let the bread cool for about 15 minutes on the baking sheet. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Step 11

Serve the bread plain or with butter and jam. Enjoy!
