  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili powder (optional, adjust to heat preference)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cardamom pods (lightly crushed)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves (chopped, for garnish)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 200 ml water (as needed)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat.

Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, and bay leaf. Sauté for 1 minute until aromatic.

Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until golden brown, about 8-10 minutes.
