Ingredients

  • 36 pieces wonton wrappers
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 piece egg (for sealing wontons)
  • 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

Directions

Step 1

In a skillet over medium heat, cook the Italian sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks. Drain any excess grease and let cool slightly.

Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, marinara sauce, fresh basil, garlic powder, onion powder, and crushed red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly until well combined.

Step 3

Lay out the wonton wrappers on a clean surface. Place approximately 1 teaspoon of the filling mixture in the center of each wonton wrapper.

Step 4

In a small bowl, beat the egg with a tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Using your finger or a small brush, lightly moisten the edges of each wonton wrapper with the egg wash.

Step 5

Fold the wontons by bringing opposite corners together, forming a triangle, and pressing the edges firmly to seal. Make sure there are no air pockets inside. Optionally, bring the two long corners together and press gently to create a dumpling-like shape.

Step 6

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the wontons in small batches (5-6 at a time) for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil using a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Step 7

Serve the wontons warm with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy immediately!
