Ingredients

  • 900 grams Russet potatoes
  • 500 grams Carrots
  • 300 grams Onions
  • 50 grams Butter
  • 100 milliliters Milk
  • 1 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1 piece Smoked sausage (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Peel the potatoes and cut them into large chunks.

Step 2

Peel the carrots and slice them into thick coins.

Step 3

Peel the onions and roughly chop them into large pieces.

Step 4

Place the potatoes, carrots, and onions in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the vegetables and sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of salt.

Step 5

Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and let simmer for about 20–25 minutes, or until all the vegetables are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 6

While the vegetables are cooking, prepare the smoked sausage (if using) according to the package instructions. Typically, this involves simmering it in water for about 15 minutes.

Step 7

Drain the potatoes, carrots, and onions, then return them to the pot.

Step 8

Add the butter and milk to the pot. Mash the potatoes, carrots, and onions together with a potato masher until the mixture is smooth but slightly chunky.

Step 9

Season the mash with black pepper and additional salt to taste, mixing well.

Step 10

Serve the hutspot hot, optionally with the sliced smoked sausage on the side or on top.
