Ingredients

  • 4 Italian sausage links
  • 4 Hoagie rolls or hot dog buns
  • 1 Green bell pepper
  • 1 Red bell pepper
  • 1 Yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese or provolone cheese
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter

Directions

Step 1

Preheat a grill or stovetop grill pan to medium heat.

Step 2

Place the Italian sausage links on the grill and cook for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until fully cooked with internal temperatures reaching 160°F (70°C). Set aside once done.

Step 3

While the sausages cook, prepare the vegetables: slice the green and red bell peppers into thin strips, and slice the onion into thin rings. Mince the garlic cloves.

Step 4

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the sliced peppers and onions for 6-8 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized. Add minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for an additional 2 minutes, then remove from heat.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 6

Slice the hoagie rolls or hot dog buns lengthwise, but don’t cut all the way through. Spread a thin layer of butter on the insides of the rolls.

Step 7

Toast the buttered buns in the oven for 3-5 minutes until lightly crispy.

Step 8

Place one sausage link in each toasted roll and top with a generous portion of sautéed peppers and onions.

Step 9

Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese over each sausage dog.

Step 10

Place the assembled sausage dogs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 11

Serve hot, optionally with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
