Ingredients

  • 4 cups apple cider
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 sticks cinnamon sticks
  • 5 pieces whole cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoons ancho chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoons lime juice
  • 0.5 cups apple slices
  • 0.5 cups orange slices
  • 2 ounces optional tequila or mezcal

Directions

Step 1

In a medium-sized pot, combine the apple cider, orange juice, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and ancho chili powder.

Step 2

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Step 3

Once the cider is simmering, lower the heat to medium-low and add the brown sugar, vanilla extract, lime juice, apple slices, and orange slices. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Allow the cider to gently simmer for 15–20 minutes, letting the flavors meld together.

Step 5

Remove the pot from the heat and strain the cider through a fine mesh sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks if desired.

Step 6

Taste the cider and adjust sweetness or spice levels if necessary.

Step 7

For an adult twist, stir in tequila or mezcal, if using.

Step 8

Serve hot in mugs, garnished with additional apple or orange slices if desired.
