Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 third cup honey
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg, beaten (optional, for egg wash)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and honey. Stir until the honey is fully dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Step 2

Add the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

Step 3

Gradually add the whole wheat flour, one cup at a time, mixing until well incorporated. Then, add the all-purpose flour, a half-cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle a small amount of additional flour as needed.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a roll and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, about 1 inch apart.

Step 7

Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until puffy and nearly doubled in size.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If desired, brush the tops of the rolls with beaten egg for a shiny finish.

Step 9

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove them from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Step 10

Serve warm and enjoy! Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
