Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 0.5 medium green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 3 cloves minced garlic
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup water or beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and swirl to coat the pan.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a wooden spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 3

Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the cooked beef. Stir and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4

Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.

Step 5

Add the water or beef broth to the skillet. Stir well and reduce the heat to low. Simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.

Step 6

Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add additional salt, pepper, or a splash of Worcestershire sauce to your liking.

Step 7

Serve warm on toasted hamburger buns for sloppy joes or spooned over hot dogs as a chili topping.
