Ingredients

  • 8 pieces red bird's eye chilies
  • 1 medium red bell pepper
  • 4 pieces garlic cloves
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano (dried)
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons water (optional, for consistency adjustment)

Directions

Step 1

Wash the bird's eye chilies and red bell pepper thoroughly under cold water. Pat dry with a paper towel.

Step 2

Cut off the stems of the bird's eye chilies. If you prefer milder heat, remove some of the seeds. Slice the red bell pepper into smaller manageable pieces, discarding the seeds and membrane.

Step 3

Peel the garlic cloves and set them aside.

Step 4

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Once heated, sauté the chilies, red bell pepper, and garlic cloves for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until softened and aromatic.

Step 5

Transfer the sautéed ingredients to a blender or food processor. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil, red wine vinegar, lemon juice, smoked paprika, oregano, and salt.

Step 6

Blend the mixture on high until smooth. If the sauce is too thick, you can add water a tablespoon at a time until the desired consistency is achieved.

Step 7

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you'd like it spicier, you can blend in more fresh chilies.

Step 8

Pour the Piri Piri sauce into a sterilized glass jar or bottle and allow it to cool completely.

Step 9

Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Shake well before each use and enjoy with grilled chicken, seafood, vegetables, or as a condiment for any dish that needs a spicy kick.
