Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 2 cups, diced Cooked ham
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 3 cups Whole milk
  • 2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped (optional for garnish) Fresh parsley
  • 1 as needed Nonstick cooking spray

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin, even rounds about 1/8-inch thick using a sharp knife or mandoline. Set aside in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning.

Step 3

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is lightly golden.

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk, making sure there are no lumps. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Lower the heat to medium-low and stir in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat.

Step 6

Drain and pat the potato slices dry. Layer one-third of the potato slices evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish.

Step 7

Sprinkle one-third of the diced ham over the potatoes, followed by about one-third of the cheese sauce. Spread the sauce evenly over the layer.

Step 8

Repeat the layers twice more, finishing with a layer of cheese sauce on top.

Step 9

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the dish.

Step 10

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes.

Step 11

Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Step 12

Let the dish rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
