Ingredients

  • 113 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams granulated sugar
  • 100 grams packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 240 milliliters unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 200 grams all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 170 grams cream cheese, softened
  • 56 grams unsalted butter, softened
  • 200 grams powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan, or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large bowl, cream together 113 grams of softened unsalted butter, 200 grams of granulated sugar, and 100 grams of packed light brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Step 3

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in 240 milliliters of unsweetened applesauce and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together 200 grams of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 0.5 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 0.25 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 0.5 teaspoon of salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Step 6

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly.

Step 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Step 8

While the bars are cooling, prepare the frosting. In a medium bowl, beat 170 grams of softened cream cheese and 56 grams of softened unsalted butter until smooth and creamy.

Step 9

Gradually add 200 grams of powdered sugar, beating until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step 10

Once the bars are completely cool, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top. Cut into 12 bars and serve.
