Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground venison
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp thyme, dried
  • 4 whole wheat burger buns
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 4 cheddar cheese slices

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground venison, olive oil, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and thyme. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into four equal parts and shape each portion into a patty roughly 3/4 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing up during cooking.

Step 3

Preheat a grill or a large skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, you may add a little oil to prevent sticking.

Step 4

Place the venison patties on the hot grill or skillet. Cook for approximately 6-7 minutes on the first side, then flip the patties carefully and cook for another 5-6 minutes on the second side. Add a cheese slice on each patty during the last 2 minutes of cooking to melt.

Step 5

Check to ensure the internal temperature of the patties reaches 160°F (71°C) for food safety.

Step 6

While cooking the patties, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by placing a cooked venison patty on each bottom bun, followed by lettuce leaves, tomato slices, and the top bun.

Step 8

Serve immediately while hot, with your choice of sides like sweet potato fries or a fresh salad.
