Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons whey protein concentrate
  • 0.25 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 whole grain hamburger buns
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 4 cheddar cheese slices
  • 0.25 cup ketchup
  • 0.25 cup mustard
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lean ground beef, egg, whey protein concentrate, breadcrumbs, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix together until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape them into burger patties, about 1 inch thick.

Step 3

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.

Step 4

Place the burger patties onto the grill or skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

Step 5

In the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.

Step 6

While the burgers are cooking, toast the whole grain buns until golden brown.

Step 7

Assemble the burgers by laying a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the cooked burger patty with melted cheese, 2 slices of tomato, a slice or two of red onion, and your choice of condiments: ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.

Step 8

Place the top half of the bun on top and serve immediately.
