Ingredients

  • 6 oz Extra-lean ground beef (96% lean, 4% fat)
  • 1 Low-fat hamburger bun (whole wheat if preferred)
  • 1 Fat-free or reduced-fat American cheese slice
  • 0.5 tsp Onion powder
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 Iceberg lettuce leaves
  • 2 Tomato slices
  • 3 slices Pickles (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Sugar-free or reduced-calorie ketchup
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 1 spray Cooking spray

Directions

Step 1

Preheat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and lightly spray it with cooking spray.

Step 2

In a mixing bowl, combine the extra-lean ground beef with the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until the spices are evenly distributed, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 3

Shape the meat mixture into a patty about 1/2 inch thick.

Step 4

Place the patty on the heated skillet or grill pan and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes on the other side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F and the burger is fully cooked.

Step 5

In the final minute of cooking, place the cheese slice on top of the patty so it melts slightly.

Step 6

Toast the hamburger bun lightly either in a toaster or on the skillet for about 30 seconds until golden brown.

Step 7

Assemble the burger: Place one lettuce leaf on the bottom half of the toasted bun, followed by the tomato slices and pickles (if using). Add the cooked burger patty with melted cheese on top.

Step 8

Spread the ketchup and mustard onto the inside of the top half of the bun, then place it over the patty to complete the burger.

Step 9

Serve immediately, optionally pairing with a side salad or grilled veggies to keep it light.
