Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup Hershey's cocoa
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans or a 13x9-inch rectangular pan.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, Hershey's cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until evenly mixed.

Step 3

Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed with a hand or stand mixer for 2 minutes, scraping the sides as needed.

Step 4

Carefully stir in the boiling water using a spatula or spoon. The batter will be thin, but this is normal for this recipe.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans or pour it into the rectangular pan.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes (for round pans) or 35 to 40 minutes (for a rectangular pan), or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cakes from the oven and cool them in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

Frost and decorate the cooled cake with your favorite chocolate frosting.
