Ingredients

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 0.25 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water (110°F/45°C). Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2

In a medium-sized, non-metallic mixing bowl, combine 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/4 cup all-purpose flour.

Step 3

Add the yeast mixture to the sugar and flour mixture and stir well.

Step 4

Slowly pour in 1 cup of milk, stirring until smooth and well combined. This is the initial mix for your Herman Starter.

Step 5

Cover the bowl loosely with a clean cloth or plastic wrap (do not seal tightly) and leave it at room temperature to ferment. This starts the process of creating your starter.

Step 6

For the next 4 days, stir the starter once per day. Do not refrigerate; keep it in a warm spot in your kitchen.

Step 7

On Day 5, 'feed' the starter: Add 1 cup each of granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and milk. Stir well to combine.

Step 8

Repeat the stirring process once per day for Days 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Step 9

On Day 10, 'feed' the starter again with 1 cup each of granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, and milk. Stir well.
